TXTCOLUMN is an AutoCAD text column LISP. Pick the start point of the first line, set the text height and line spacing, then type your lines one by one; each line is placed under the previous one at equal spacing as a separate TEXT object.

It suits general notes, short material lists, legend descriptions and other lists on a sheet. Because every line is its own object, you can later move, delete or edit lines individually.

The default line spacing is 1.6 times the text height, and you can type any other value. All lines from one run form a single undo group.

How to use it

  1. Load the file with APPLOAD and type TXTCOLUMN.
  2. Click the start point of the first line.
  3. Enter the text height and line spacing, or press Enter to accept the defaults.
  4. Type each line and press Enter; it is added to the drawing right away.
  5. Press Enter on an empty line to finish.

Notes and tips

  • Texts are created on the current layer, in the current text style, left-aligned.
  • Lines are stacked downward along the current UCS; in a rotated UCS the list follows that direction.
  • An empty line ends the command, so to leave a gap you need to type at least one character on that line.
  • If you want one editable paragraph instead of separate lines, AutoCAD's MTEXT command is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type lines of text one under another in AutoCAD?

Run TXTCOLUMN, pick the start point, set height and spacing, then type the lines one by one. Each line is placed under the previous one.

How is this different from MTEXT?

MTEXT creates one multiline object. TXTCOLUMN writes every line as its own TEXT object, which makes it easy to move or delete lines individually.
