AutoCAD TEXTEDIT Command: How to Edit Text in a Drawing

Edits the contents of single-line text, mtext, dimension text and attribute definitions.

Command
TEXTEDIT
Aliases
ED
English name
Edit Text

The AutoCAD TEXTEDIT command lets you edit existing text in place. Besides TEXT and MTEXT objects, it also edits dimension text and attribute definitions.

Single-line text opens for editing right on the drawing; mtext opens in the text editor with the Text Editor tab on the ribbon. Double-clicking text usually does the same thing.

In Multiple mode the command stays active after each edit and waits for the next object, which saves time when you are correcting many labels.

How to use it

  1. Type TEXTEDIT or ED and press Enter.
  2. Select the text, dimension or attribute definition to edit.
  3. Change the text and confirm with Enter, Ctrl+Enter or a click outside.
  4. In Multiple mode, select the next object, then press Enter when done.

Options

Mode (M)
Switches between editing one object (Single) and several in a row (Multiple).
Undo (U)
Undoes the last text change made in the command.
TEXTEDITMODE
System variable that sets whether the command starts in Single or Multiple mode.

Notes and tips

  • In dimension text, keep the <> placeholder if you want to keep the measured value.
  • To change attribute values inside a block, double-click the block to open the attribute editor instead of using TEXTEDIT.
