AutoCAD REGEN Command: Regenerate the Drawing Display

Regenerates the current viewport from the drawing database.

Command
REGEN
Aliases
RE
English name
Regenerate

The AutoCAD REGEN command recalculates every object in the current viewport from the drawing database and redraws the screen. Screen coordinates, object display and visibility are all updated.

The most common reason to use it is to smooth circles and arcs that look like polygons after zooming in. Some setting changes, such as linetype scale or fill display, also need a REGEN before they show on screen.

REGEN only affects the current viewport. If you have several viewports in paper space, use REGENALL to regenerate all of them.

How to use it

  1. Type REGEN or RE and press Enter.
  2. The command runs without prompts and regenerates the current viewport.
  3. Type REGENALL to regenerate every viewport.

Options

No options
REGEN takes no input; it regenerates the current viewport as soon as it runs.
REGENALL
Companion command that regenerates all viewports.
REGENAUTO
Turns automatic regeneration after certain operations on or off.
VIEWRES
Controls how many segments are used to display circles and arcs on screen.

Notes and tips

  • If circles keep looking jagged, increase VIEWRES; it affects the display only, not plotted output.
  • REGEN can take a few seconds in very large drawings, which is normal.
  • REDRAW also clears display artifacts and is faster because it does not recalculate the database.
