AutoCAD LAYOFF Command: Turn Off a Layer by Picking

Turns off the layer of the object you pick.

Command
LAYOFF
English name
Layer Off

The AutoCAD LAYOFF command turns off the layer of the object you click. You do not have to look up the layer name in the Layer Properties Manager, and you can keep picking objects to turn off several layers in a row.

Objects on a layer that is off are not displayed or plotted, but they remain in the drawing. If you pick an object on the current layer, AutoCAD asks whether you really want to turn the current layer off.

To turn every layer back on, run LAYON. To turn on individual layers, use the On column in the LAYER palette.

How to use it

  1. Type LAYOFF and press Enter.
  2. Click an object on the layer you want to turn off; the layer turns off immediately.
  3. Keep picking objects to turn off more layers.
  4. Use Undo to reverse the last pick, or press Enter to finish.

Options

Select object
Turns off the layer of the picked object.
Settings
Changes the Viewports and Block selection settings.
Viewports
In a paper space viewport, choose Off for the whole drawing or Vpfreeze to freeze the layer in that viewport only.
Block selection
Controls which layer is affected when you pick an object inside a block: Block, Entity or None.
Undo
Reverses the last layer you turned off in this command.

Notes and tips

  • Layers that are off are still processed during REGEN; in large drawings, freezing with LAYFRZ is better for performance.
  • LAYON turns all layers back on in one step.
  • Set Block selection to Entity to turn off the layer of an object nested inside a block.
