AutoCAD EXTEND Command: How to Extend Lines to Edges
Extends objects so they meet the edges of other objects.
- Command
- EXTEND
- Aliases
- EX
- English name
- Extend
The AutoCAD EXTEND command lengthens lines, arcs, open polylines and similar objects until they meet the edge of another object. Start it with EXTEND or the alias EX. It works as the counterpart of TRIM.
Since AutoCAD 2021, Quick mode is the default: all objects act as potential boundary edges, and you click near the end of the object you want to extend. The object extends to the nearest boundary in that direction. To select boundaries first, switch to Standard mode with the mOde option.
How to use it
- Type EXTEND or EX and press Enter.
- Click the object near the end you want to extend.
- To extend several objects at once, press and drag a freehand path across them.
- Hold Shift and click to trim objects instead.
- Press Enter or Esc to finish.
Options
- Boundary edges
- Lets you select the objects that act as boundaries yourself.
- Crossing
- Extends objects touched by a crossing window defined by two points.
- mOde
- Switches between Quick and Standard mode.
- Project
- Sets the projection used to find boundaries in 3D.
- Undo
- Reverses the last extension without leaving the command.
Notes and tips
- Closed objects such as circles and closed polylines cannot be extended.
- In Standard mode, setting Edge to Extend lets objects reach the imaginary extension of a boundary.
- To extend by an exact length rather than to an edge, use LENGTHEN.
