LAYFRZPICK is an AutoCAD freeze layer LISP tool. After you start it, you click objects one at a time; each click freezes that object's layer and the objects on it disappear. Keep going until you press Enter. It is a fast way to hide piping, furniture or grid layers you do not need in a busy drawing.

If you click an object on the current layer, the tool skips it with a message, because the current layer cannot be frozen. At the end it reports how many layers were frozen. Use LAYTHW (thaw all layers) or LAYER to bring them back, or type U right away, since the whole session is one undo step.

AutoCAD's built-in LAYFRZ is similar and adds settings such as block nesting level and viewport freeze. LAYFRZPICK has no settings: it always freezes the layer globally for the whole drawing, and it behaves the same in full AutoCAD and in GstarCAD.

How to use it

  1. Load layfrzpick.lsp with APPLOAD.
  2. Type LAYFRZPICK at the command line.
  3. Click objects on the layers you want to hide, one after another.
  4. Press Enter when done and check how many layers were frozen.
  5. Use LAYTHW or LAYER to thaw the layers again.

Notes and tips

  • Freezing is global for the whole drawing; it does not do per-viewport (VP Freeze) freezing in paper space. Use LAYFRZ or VPLAYER for that.
  • If you click a block, the block reference's layer is frozen, not the layer of the nested object.
  • The current layer cannot be frozen; make another layer current first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I freeze a layer by clicking an object in AutoCAD?

Run LAYFRZPICK and click objects. Each click freezes that object's layer; press Enter to finish. AutoCAD's built-in LAYFRZ works in a similar way.

How do I unfreeze the layers again?

Type U right after to undo the whole session, use LAYTHW to thaw all layers, or thaw them one by one in the LAYER dialog.
