AutoCAD QSAVE Command: Quick Save Your Drawing with Ctrl+S

Saves the drawing using its current file name and format without prompting.

Command
QSAVE
English name
Quick Save

The AutoCAD QSAVE command saves the open drawing with its current file name and format. The Save button and the Ctrl+S shortcut both run this command. If the drawing has been saved before, no dialog appears.

If the drawing has never been saved, for example it is still named Drawing1.dwg, QSAVE opens the Save Drawing As dialog and asks for a name and folder.

The DWG version used is set by the default format on the Open and Save tab of OPTIONS. If you share files with someone on an older AutoCAD release, use SAVEAS to pick an older DWG format.

How to use it

  1. Type QSAVE or press Ctrl+S.
  2. If this is the first save, choose a folder and file name in the dialog.
  3. Pick the DWG version you need under Files of type and click Save.
  4. From then on, Ctrl+S saves immediately.

Options

Ctrl+S
Keyboard shortcut that runs QSAVE.
First save
An unnamed drawing opens the Save Drawing As dialog.
Default format
OPTIONS > Open and Save > Save as sets the DWG version QSAVE uses.
SAVETIME

Notes and tips

  • Automatic saves are written as .sv$ files to a temporary folder and can be found with the Drawing Recovery Manager after a crash.
  • The .bak file created on save is the previous version; rename it to .dwg to open it.
  • Use SAVEAS instead of QSAVE to save under a different name or DWG version.
