AutoCAD LAYMCUR Command: Make an Object's Layer Current

Makes the layer of the selected object the current layer.

Command
LAYMCUR
English name
Make Object's Layer Current

The AutoCAD LAYMCUR command makes the layer of the object you select the current layer. In a drawing with hundreds of layers, it saves you from searching the list when you want to draw on the same layer as an existing object.

The command has a single prompt asking you to select an object. After the pick, the command line reports which layer is now current and the command ends.

The same function is available as the Make Current button on the Layers panel of the Home tab. The name of the current layer is stored in the CLAYER system variable.

How to use it

  1. Type LAYMCUR and press Enter.
  2. Click the object whose layer you want to make current.
  3. Check the command line message to confirm the new current layer.
  4. Start drawing; new objects are created on that layer.

Options

Select object
The only input; the layer of the selected object becomes current.
CLAYER
The system variable that holds the current layer name, which this command changes.

Notes and tips

  • LAYMCUR does not move existing objects; use MATCHPROP or the Properties palette for that.
  • If you pick a block, the layer the block reference is on becomes current.
  • Objects on layers that are off or frozen are not visible and cannot be picked.
