The AutoCAD HATCH command fills an enclosed boundary with a hatch pattern, a solid fill or a gradient. It is used for section materials, wall infill and floor finishes.
When the command starts, the Hatch Creation tab opens on the ribbon. Set the pattern, scale, angle, color and transparency there, then click inside the area. AutoCAD detects the boundary and shows a preview.
Hatches are associative by default, so they update when you change their boundary.
How to use it
- Type HATCH or H and press Enter.
- Choose the pattern, scale and angle on the ribbon.
- Click inside the area to fill, or type S to select boundary objects.
- Check the preview and press Enter to create the hatch.
Options
- Pick internal point
- Click inside an area and AutoCAD finds the boundary automatically.
- Select objects (S)
- Hatches the closed objects you select as the boundary.
- Pattern / Scale / Angle
- Set on the Hatch Creation tab to control the pattern type, size and rotation.
- Associative
- Turns automatic updating with the boundary on or off.
- seTtings (T)
- Opens the Hatch and Gradient dialog with all settings.
- Undo (U)
- Removes the last boundary you picked.
Notes and tips
- Small gaps in the boundary prevent the hatch; close them or raise the Gap Tolerance value.
- If the pattern looks solid or doesn't appear, the scale is wrong for your drawing units.
- Use MATCHPROP to copy hatch settings from one hatch to another.
- Very large, complex hatches can slow a drawing down; splitting them into separate hatches helps.
